While it offers flexibility and the comfort of working in your own space, it also presents unique challenges. Distractions are common, and without a structured environment, it’s easy to lose focus. However, with the right strategies, you can maximise productivity and thrive in a remote work setting.
Having transitioned from the structured school environment of being a teacher to building two seven-figure businesses from home, I’ve learned a few essential tips to stay productive and maintain a work-life balance. Here are my top strategies:

1. Plan Every Minute of Your Day
The first and most crucial step to maximising productivity is meticulous planning. This doesn’t mean just scheduling work tasks. You need to plan every aspect of your day, including personal activities like going to the gym, walking the dog, eating meals, and even going to bed. When every hour is accounted for, there’s less room for distractions or idle time.
It might seem extreme to schedule your free time, but this approach ensures that you use your time intentionally, balancing work and relaxation effectively. Knowing what you’re supposed to be doing at any given moment helps keep you on track, reducing the temptation to procrastinate or get sidetracked.
2. Minimise Distractions by Managing Your Phone
One of the biggest productivity killers is your phone. With endless apps, notifications, and the temptation of social media, it’s very easy to get sucked into a never ending stream of distractions. To combat this, I recommend physically distancing yourself from your phone during work hours. Keep it in a box or another room away from your desk.
This small action can make a huge difference. Set specific times in your schedule to check your phone for messages, respond to clients, or interact with your team. By controlling when and how often you check your phone, you avoid falling down the rabbit hole of endless reels and irrelevant updates. It’s all about creating boundaries and sticking to them.
3. Use a Timer to Stay on Task
Timers can be powerful tools for maintaining focus and efficiency. When you start a task, estimate how long it should take and set a timer for that duration. For example, if you believe a particular task should take 30 minutes, set a 30-minute timer on your desk. This serves as a reference point, constantly reminding you to stay on track and work efficiently.
It’s easy to underestimate how much time certain tasks take or to lose track of time altogether. By using a timer, you create a sense of urgency and awareness, helping you complete tasks within a reasonable timeframe. This method also helps break larger tasks into manageable chunks, making them less overwhelming and more achievable.
4. Take Regular Breaks to Recharge
On top of the above strategies, it’s important to schedule regular breaks throughout your day. Working for long periods without a break can lead to burnout and decreased productivity. Short, scheduled breaks allow your mind to rest and recharge, which can boost your overall productivity and creativity.
Use this time to stretch, grab something to eat, or take a quick walk. These activities can help refresh your mind and body, making it easier to maintain focus when you return to work.
Working from home doesn’t have to be a struggle between productivity and distraction.
